Battle of the Bulldogs: Georgia, Mississippi State set to face off

The country is in for a treat as No. 4 Georgia and No. 5 Mississippi State square off in a crucial conference matchup. The teams are tied with Texas for the conference lead, each holding a 7-2 record. It’s a battle of the Bulldogs tussling for Southeastern Conference supremacy.

Mississippi State enters as one of the hottest teams in the league, riding a nine-game winning streak. The Bulldogs are also undefeated at home, where the series will be played, boasting an 18-0 record.

Georgia has handled the road well in limited action, posting a 3-1 record away from home. Both teams are coming off weekend sweeps of conference opponents.

The question is how Georgia’s pitching staff will hold up. In its ongoing search for a third starting pitcher, Georgia has not yet named a Game 3 starter. The bullpen is also stretched thin. Georgia labored in a midweek win over Georgia State, using eight pitchers out of the bullpen. While it did not deploy its top arms, Justin Byrd and Paul Farley, coach Wes Johnson may need to navigate a tough challenge against a potent Mississippi State lineup.

There is also an added wrinkle, as the series begins Thursday instead of Friday. Georgia’s midweek game stretched to four hours Tuesday, leaving a shortened recovery window.

However, third baseman Tre Phelps appears poised to heat up. Phelps hit two home runs in his last game and ranks second in the conference with a .423 batting average. The only player ahead of him is Mississippi State outfielder Bryce Chance. Phelps, a preseason Golden Spikes Award contender, could bolster his case with a strong showing in this matchup.

Catcher Daniel Jackson has emerged as a key contributor in 2026, leading the team in home runs, triples, slugging percentage and stolen bases. His defense behind the plate will be critical, as Mississippi State has swiped 42 bases this season.

Regardless of the outcome, this weekend’s series features a clash of heavyweights, both at the team and individual level.
