Mitch Voit emerges as top prospect after breakout spring

Mitch Voit arrived at Michigan as a promising two-way player, but after two seasons and an elbow surgery, he decided to focus solely on hitting. That decision paid off. This spring, Voit emerged as one of the Big Ten’s top all-around position players and elevated his stock as a pro prospect.

Now, after a standout season as Michigan’s everyday second baseman, Voit is firmly in the conversation to be selected early in July’s MLB draft, with scouts viewing him as a potential early-round pick.

“I tend to look way down the road at what my big goals are,” Voit said. “So when opportunities like this happen, you can take a minute and be thankful for where you are. But then you also have to understand there is a long road ahead of you, and it’s never time to stop.”

Voit is a 6-foot, 210-pound second baseman known for his well-rounded toolset. The right-handed hitter uses simple mechanics and a short swing to consistently barrel up the baseball and hit it hard. He has improved his plate discipline and approach over the last three years. Scouts believe he also will continue to add more power as he matures.

Defensively, Voit brings versatility and athleticism, with experience all over the diamond and above-average arm strength. He played third base in high school and opened his college career at the hot corner as a freshman. As a sophomore, he shifted to first base and also saw time in the outfield. This spring, he took over as Michigan’s starting second baseman, demonstrating his adaptability and value as a defender.

“My versatility as a position player is really important,” Voit said. “Whatever team I’m on, it helps everybody. My dependability with the bat is a strength, especially in important moments when you need a spark or need someone to come through in the clutch.”

Although Voit’s versatility will serve him well at the next level, he believes second base is where he fits best. It’s a position he came to enjoy and grow comfortable with throughout the season.

“If I had it my way, I’d be playing second base for the next 20 years,” Voit said. “I absolutely love it. I actually never played it until this year. I had so much fun.”

Voit made noticeable strides each year at Michigan, steadily evolving into a more complete player. As a freshman, he hit .267 with seven home runs, 32 RBIs, 50 strikeouts and 18 walks over 211 plate appearances. He followed that with a strong sophomore campaign, batting .292 with 14 homers, 46 RBIs, 61 strikeouts and 23 walks in 269 trips to the plate.

After undergoing elbow surgery and shifting his focus solely to being a position player, Voit used the fall to refine his mindset and approach at the plate. That time off the mound paid off. His improved discipline and experience were evident this spring. He posted a career-best .346 batting average with 14 home runs, 60 RBIs, 34 strikeouts and 40 walks in 261 plate appearances.

Voit credits the Michigan coaching staff for his growth and speaks highly of his time in the program. Playing for Michigan was a special experience he’ll carry with him into the next chapter.

“I’m very thankful for our coaching staff,” Voit said. “I’ve had a great time at Michigan and been blessed with all of the opportunities.”
