The 2026 MLB trade deadline created clear winners and losers, but few organizations improved their long-term outlook more than the Los Angeles Angels while the Cleveland Guardians strengthened their postseason push. Los Angeles finally embraced a full-scale rebuild by cashing in valuable trade assets, while Cleveland addressed its biggest weakness — offense — in an effort to stay in the thick of the American League Central race.
Los Angeles Angels
The Angels finally did what many around baseball believed they should have done years ago by committing to a true selloff at the trade deadline.
Los Angeles dealt multiple pitchers along with outfielder Jo Adell, capitalizing on his value after years of waiting for the former top prospect to reach his potential. Adell never fully developed into the franchise cornerstone many envisioned after he ranked among baseball’s top five prospects, and with the Angels entering a rebuilding phase, the timing made sense. Now 27, Adell gets a fresh start with a Guardians club searching for offensive production in a pennant race.
In return, the Angels acquired catcher Jacob Cozart, the No. 48 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft. The 23-year-old has spent the season at Double-A Akron, where he has hit 10 home runs while continuing to establish himself as one of the better defensive catching prospects in the minors. Cozart has thrown out 28 would-be base stealers this season and projects to remain behind the plate because of his arm strength. With Logan O’Hoppe also traded, Cozart now has a much clearer path to the major leagues.
Moving Adell and O’Hoppe signaled more than a willingness to reshape the roster. It represented the Angels turning the page on the Mike Trout era and fully embracing a long-overdue rebuild.
The Angels also moved pitchers José Soriano, Ryan Zeferjahn, Kirby Yates and Brent Suter, recognizing their place near the bottom of the standings and maximizing the value of veterans and controllable talent. In total, Los Angeles acquired seven players, highlighted by Moisés Ballesteros from the Cubs and consensus top-50 prospect Arjun Nimmala from the Blue Jays.
Ballesteros projects as a bat-first catcher or designated hitter, but his offensive upside is significant. According to Baseball Savant, he owns a 46.7% hard-hit rate with above-average exit velocity and bat speed. Despite appearing in only 47 games this season and making just five starts behind the plate, Ballesteros should have an opportunity to earn more consistent at-bats with the Angels. Travis d’Arnaud and Tyler Heineman currently sit ahead of him on the depth chart, but Los Angeles should have every incentive to see whether Ballesteros can develop into its long-term answer at catcher.
Nimmala remains one of the more polarizing prospects in baseball, with rankings varying widely across publications. Still, most evaluators agree he is a player to watch. The 20-year-old shortstop features a plus arm and elite bat speed, giving the Angels another high-upside middle infielder who can continue developing without the pressure of contributing immediately at the major league level.
Cleveland Guardians
While the Angels focused on the future, the Guardians made aggressive moves to improve their chances of winning now.
Cleveland entered the deadline looking to bolster an offense that, according to MLB.com, ranks last in the majors in OPS despite sitting just three games behind the first-place White Sox in the AL Central.
Adell immediately addresses one of those needs. He owns a .910 OPS against left-handed pitching and provides above-average defense in the outfield, giving Cleveland another athletic option alongside Chase DeLauter and Steven Kwan. The Guardians needed another impact bat, and Adell represented one of the better offensive upgrades available without requiring an overwhelming prospect package.
Cleveland also added first baseman Nathaniel Lowe from Cincinnati just before the deadline. Lowe has hit 12 home runs this season and projects to platoon at designated hitter with Rhys Hoskins. According to Baseball-Reference, Lowe owns an .885 OPS against right-handed pitching this season but has struggled in limited opportunities against left-handers. Hoskins has historically excelled against left-handed pitching, giving manager Stephen Vogt additional flexibility to optimize matchups throughout the season.
If Cleveland can generate even modest offensive production, its pitching staff is built to carry the club.
The addition of All-Star starter Foster Griffin gives the Guardians another dependable arm alongside Gavin Williams and rookie left-hander Parker Messick. Williams has emerged as one of the American League’s best starters, posting an 11.5 strikeouts-per-nine-innings rate, while Messick has impressed throughout his rookie campaign.
Griffin returned to the majors after pitching in Japan and succeeds by consistently filling the strike zone, limiting hard contact and generating ground balls. According to Baseball Savant, opponents own just a .295 weighted on-base average against his cutter, one of his most effective pitches. While hitters may focus on that offering, Griffin mixes six additional pitches effectively, making him difficult to game-plan against over the course of a start.
With Griffin providing valuable innings, Williams and Messick continuing to develop, and Cade Smith anchoring the back end of the bullpen, Cleveland has assembled one of the American League’s more complete pitching staffs. If the Guardians can provide enough run support, they have the ingredients to remain firmly in the postseason race.
