Wisconsin talent shines in 2025 MLB draft class

Wisconsin may not be a household name for baseball players, but it consistently produces high-quality talent for the professional ranks. The 2025 MLB draft features several intriguing prospects with roots in the Badger State.

This year, Wisconsin could have five players drafted in the first seven rounds of the draft. Here are seven Wisconsin players to watch for the 2025 MLB draft.

Gavin Kilen, 2B, Tennessee

Kilen was the state’s top prospect out of Milton High School in 2022. He elected to attend college, playing at Louisville for his first two years before having an extremely productive junior season at Tennessee this spring.

Scouts rave about the left-handed hitter known for his above-average bat-to-ball skills. He shows some power potential. Defensively, he profiles best at second base but could handle shortstop if needed due to his strong arm and athleticism.

Kilen draws comparisons to fellow Oak Creek native Gavin Lux, now a member of the Cincinnati Reds, from scouts. Kilen projects as a likely top-15 pick.

Mitch Voit, 2B, Michigan

Voit was a high school star at Whitefish Bay before going to Michigan as a two-way player. He started as a pitcher and third baseman as a freshman in 2023. He gained experience in the outfield and also had success on the mound before transitioning to a full-time position player this season.

Voit is a 6-foot, 210-pound second baseman known for his well-rounded toolset. The right-handed hitter uses simple mechanics and a short swing to consistently barrel up the baseball and hit it hard.

Defensively, Voit has the skill set to play all around the diamond, which will benefit him in pro ball. He hopes to remain at second base long-term.

Scouts project Voit as a second-round pick in the 2025 MLB draft.

Nate Snead, RHP, Tennessee

Snead was an under-the-radar pitcher at South Milwaukee High School. He started his college career at Wichita State before serving as a valuable weapon out of the Tennessee bullpen the last two seasons.

Snead is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-hander who throws a fastball that sits in the high 90s and touches 101 mph. He throws from a unique arm slot and has a five-pitch mix. He was a multi-inning reliever at Tennessee, but scouts are intrigued by his potential as a starting pitcher.

Scouts project Snead as a likely third- or fourth-round pick in the 2025 MLB draft.

Peter Kussow, RHP, Arrowhead HS

Kussow is the top high school player in Wisconsin this year. Scouts flocked to see him every time he took the mound for Arrowhead this spring. When the righty was on, he looked like a potential third-round pick.

While Kussow might not go that high in the 2025 MLB draft, he’s a strong candidate to go within the first five rounds. If he signs, he’s likely to secure the largest signing bonus ever for a Wisconsin prep pitcher. To date, only three Wisconsin high school pitchers have signed contracts worth more than $500,000, with the current record holder being Kevin James, who received $625,000 in 2009 from Whitefish Bay High School.

Kussow is a 6-foot-5, 215-pound right-hander who throws a fastball, curveball and changeup from a three-quarters arm slot and starter profile.

Rory Fox, RHP, Notre Dame

Fox was a multisport star at Catholic Memorial before going to Notre Dame as a two-way player. He eventually focused exclusively on pitching, where he still boasts plenty of potential.

Fox is a 6-foot-2, 210-pound right-hander with an athletic, clean delivery who pitches from a three-quarters arm slot. His fastball sits in the low-90s and touches 96 mph, featuring quality movement that keeps hitters off balance. The slider is his most reliable secondary pitch.

Fox is a candidate to go in the first seven rounds of the 2025 MLB draft.

Alex Breckheimer, RHP, Kansas

Breckheimer, a 6-foot-5, 270-pound Chilton native, pitched two seasons at Bryant & Stratton (Wis.) before joining Kansas for his junior year in 2025. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound righty features a high-effort, unrefined delivery but showed solid control. He leans heavily on a swing-and-miss fastball, sitting 93–94 mph and touching 98, and a mid-80s slider.

Breckheimer intrigues scouts because of his potential and could hear his name called in the 2025 MLB draft.

Will Vierling, C, Murray State

Vierling played in just 30 games across two seasons at Louisville after excelling at Homestead High School. After transferring to Murray State in the offseason, he emerged as a key piece in the team’s College World Series run, combining power at the plate with impressive plate discipline.

Vierling could potentially hear his name called in the 2025 MLB draft.
