If you’ve followed the Georgia Bulldogs baseball this season, you know they hit home runs. They’re a high-scoring team capable of overwhelming opponents with offense. But Georgia’s 6-2 regional win over the Liberty Flames baseball was more of a defensive showcase than an offensive explosion.
Led by shortstop Kolby Branch, the Bulldogs stranded seven Liberty runners and held on in a tightly contested game. Branch made multiple defensive plays throughout the afternoon that slowed the Flames’ momentum.
In the fifth inning, with Liberty trailing by two runs, the Flames had the tying run at the plate in leadoff hitter Tanner Marsh. Marsh hit a ground ball deep in the hole at shortstop, but Branch backhanded it and threw him out in a highlight-reel play. Liberty challenged the call, but replay showed the throw beat Marsh by a step.
“I didn’t think there was any chance,” Liberty coach Bradley LeCroy said after the game.
Branch recorded the final out of the inning with another throw across his body before shouting toward the energized crowd as he came off the field. He added another strong defensive play in the seventh inning when the Flames threatened again.
“Kolby Branch is an elite, Gold Glove-caliber shortstop,” Georgia coach Wes Johnson said. “He made play after play out there for us to stop some momentum.”
It wasn’t just Branch contributing defensively. Right fielder Ryan Black made a leaping catch to rob Liberty of extra bases, while catcher Daniel Jackson delivered what Johnson called the “mound visit of the year” to calm his pitcher during a late jam.
Liberty showed early it would capitalize on any defensive mistake. The game’s lone error came in the first inning when a high throw from second baseman Ryan Wynn pulled first baseman Brennan Hudson off the bag. Although Hudson kept the ball from entering the dugout, Jordan Jaffe raced home from third to score the tying run.
As a major underdog, Liberty played aggressively throughout the game, but Georgia gave the Flames little room to operate.
Although Dylan Vigue started the game, it was Matt Scott who delivered the key outing out of the bullpen, allowing one hit over five shutout innings. Justin Byrd closed the game beginning in the seventh inning.
While Georgia’s defensive performance may have surprised some around the country, Johnson said it was nothing new to his team.
“You should have seen what Kolby did the other day in practice,” Johnson said. “He has no limits.”
Georgia still showed its trademark power at the plate. All six runs came via home runs, with six different players going deep.
The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 in the regional and will have a chance to advance to the super regionals with a win Sunday. While offensive fireworks are always expected at Foley Field, Georgia’s defense may be just as important to watch.
